The best free vocal plugins in 2026 (and when REAPER's stock plugins already win)

Search “best free vocal plugins” and you get lists of twenty downloads with no sense of which ones you actually need. Most of them overlap. Many duplicate tools REAPER already gave you. And a few “free” plugins turn out to need an account, a trial clock, or a subscription. This guide is shorter on purpose. It starts with what you already own, then names only the free plugins that add something real.

The rule here is simple: a plugin earns a spot only if it does a job REAPER's stock tools do not do, or does it noticeably faster. If stock already covers it well, that is the recommendation, because the fewer plugins in your chain, the fewer things to learn and fix later.

Start with what REAPER already gives you

REAPER (version 7.78 as of July 2026) bundles the ReaPlugs suite, and for vocals it covers most of the job:

• ReaEQ is a clean, flexible parametric EQ. It handles high-passing, mud cuts, presence, and air. If you only learn one plugin, learn this one. Our vocal EQ cheat sheet for REAPER maps the ranges.
• ReaComp is a transparent compressor for level control, and ReaXcomp is a multiband compressor that can also de-ess.

How we picked these

Every plugin below meets four tests, checked the day this article was written:

• Actually free. No trial clock, no subscription, no paywalled “pro” features needed to do the core job. A required email or account is noted where it applies.
• Runs in REAPER. Available as a VST or VST3 for Windows and macOS.
• Adds something over stock, or is meaningfully easier to use for the same task.
• From a known developer with an official download page, so you are not chasing a plugin on a random mirror.

Names of paid upgrades are mentioned only so you know the free version is not crippled. Nothing here is an affiliate link, and none of these developers paid to be listed.

The shortlist

1. TDR Nova (dynamic EQ): the one most worth adding

TDR Nova from Tokyo Dawn Records is a free dynamic EQ. Where ReaEQ makes a fixed cut or boost, Nova can move only when a frequency gets loud, which makes it a gentle de-esser, a resonance tamer, and a mix-bus tool all in one. It ships with vocal-friendly presets like “Vocal Presence” and a de-ess setting to start from. It runs as VST, AU, and AAX on Windows and macOS.

What it adds over stock: dynamic EQ in a friendlier layout than wiring up ReaXcomp. What it will not do: replace learning basic static EQ first. A paid Gentlemen's Edition exists, but the free Nova is fully usable on its own.

2. Klanghelm DC1A (compressor): fast character and glue

ReaComp is transparent, which is exactly what you want for clean level control. DC1A is the opposite on purpose: a one- or two-knob compressor that adds a bit of weight and vibe quickly. It is handy early in a chain when you want the take to feel a little more solid without dialing in threshold, ratio, attack, and release by hand. The current free version includes a mix knob for parallel compression. Windows and macOS, VST, VST3, AU, and AAX.

What it adds over stock: speed and character. What it will not do: give you the precise control ReaComp offers when you need it. Many people keep both and reach for the right one per track.

3. Valhalla Supermassive (reverb and delay): lush space, free

ReaVerbate is fine for a plain, usable reverb. Valhalla Supermassive from Valhalla DSP is a free reverb and delay with a large set of modes that go from tight ambience to huge, cinematic clouds. It is a favorite for adding depth and interest on a reverb send. It is free with no registration, and available as VST, AU, and AAX on Windows and macOS.

What it adds over stock: richer, more characterful spaces and creative delays. What it will not do: act as a tight, transparent mix reverb on a busy pop vocal, and it will not remove reverb that is already baked into a take. 4. Auburn Sounds Graillon Free Edition (pitch correction)

REAPER's own ReaTune can correct pitch, but many people find Graillon quicker and more musical for tuning vocals. The free edition of Auburn Sounds Graillon (currently Graillon 3, version 3.2) includes the pitch shifter, formant shifting, and pitch correction, which is the core of what most home vocalists want. It runs as VST, AAX, AU, and LV2 on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The paid full edition adds a doubler and extra modulation, but the free pitch correction stands on its own.

What it adds over stock: a simpler, more forgiving pitch-correction workflow. What it will not do: rescue a performance that is badly off, and heavy correction always sounds obvious. Use gentle settings first.

5. Voxengo SPAN (metering and analyzer)

SPAN is a free spectrum analyzer with real metering, including integrated LUFS loudness and true-peak readouts. It is not a vocal effect, it is the tool that tells you whether your EQ and level moves are doing what you think. If you mix by eye as well as ear, this is the free plugin that keeps you honest, and it helps when you are chasing a loudness target for a podcast or a streaming platform. What it adds over stock: clearer visual metering and loudness measurement in one window. What it will not do: change your sound. It only measures, which is the point.

How to install a plugin in REAPER

Once you have downloaded and run the installer:

What free plugins will not do

A short reality check, because this is where beginners lose time.

• They will not fix a bad recording. Room noise, heavy reverb, and clipping are recording problems, not plugin problems. Fix the source first.
• More plugins is not better. Each one you stack is another thing to set wrong. A clean chain of three good moves beats ten plugins fighting each other.
• Watch the word “free.” Some lists include trials, subscription tiers, or plugins that need an account and constant online checks. The five above do not, as of this writing, but always confirm on the developer's own site before installing.
• Only download from the official developer page. Free-plugin mirror sites sometimes bundle junk. Every plugin here has an official home, linked in the sources below.
