How to fix thin vocals in REAPER (add body and air with stock plugins)

Quick answer

A thin vocal sounds small, weak, and far away because it is short on low-mid body, roughly 150–250 Hz, and sometimes on air up high. Often the body was there and processing removed it. First check that a high-pass filter or heavy compression is not stripping the weight. Then add a gentle low-shelf or peaking boost of about 1–3 dB around 150–250 Hz with ReaEQ, and if it still sounds closed, a small high-shelf lift up around 10–12 kHz. “Thin” is the opposite complaint from muddy. A thin vocal feels small, weak, and papery, like it is sitting behind the speakers instead of in front of them. It has no chest and no weight, so it never sounds convincing next to a full arrangement. The good news is that thinness is usually a tone or processing problem, not a talent problem, and you can improve it in REAPER without buying anything.

Before you reach for a boost, it is worth knowing that a thin sound has two very different causes, and they need opposite fixes. Either the body was never captured, or the body was captured and your own processing took it out. Sorting out which one you have is the whole job. What thin actually means

Most of a voice’s warmth and weight lives in the low mids, roughly 150 Hz to 250 Hz. Presence and clarity sit higher, around 2 to 5 kHz, and openness or air lives up above 10 kHz. A vocal sounds thin when the low-mid body is too quiet relative to everything above it, so the voice reads as all edge and no core.

Three common situations produce that balance in a home recording:

Check the source and your chain first

Adding a boost to a vocal that is thin because of over-processing just makes a fight between two plugins. Rule that out before you add anything.

Bypass the whole FX chain

Turn off every plugin on the vocal track and listen to the raw take. If the raw recording already has body and your processed version is the thin one, the fix is to back off what you added, not to add more.

Find an aggressive high-pass

Look at your first EQ band. A high-pass set up around 120–150 Hz or higher will thin most voices. Pull it down toward 80–100 Hz and see if the weight comes back on its own.

Ease off the compressor

If you are compressing hard, raise the threshold or lower the ratio so the plugin is doing less. Then judge the tone again. Often a vocal is not missing lows, it is just being squashed thin.

Watch out

If the raw take is genuinely thin on its own, no EQ boost will fully replace body that was never recorded. You can improve it, but set your expectations from the raw file, not from what you wish it sounded like.

The fix, step by step in REAPER

1. Set the high-pass conservatively

Keep a high-pass band to clear sub-rumble, but do not let it eat the body. Around 80–100 Hz works for most voices; for a deep male voice you can go as low as 70–80 Hz. The goal is to remove floor thumps and handling noise, not the chest of the voice. If in doubt, sweep the high-pass up until the voice starts to thin, then back it down.

2. Add body with a low shelf or a wide peak

Take a ReaEQ band and set it to a low shelf, or a wide band (peaking) shape, centered around 150–250 Hz. Start with a boost of about 1–3 dB. This is where warmth and weight live, so a small lift here usually reads as the voice getting bigger and closer. Judge it in the full mix, not soloed, because a little body goes a long way once bass and drums are under it.

Why this works

Thin is a balance problem. You are not inventing new sound, you are raising the part of the voice that carries its size relative to the brighter frequencies that were dominating. A gentle shelf lifts a whole region smoothly, which sounds more natural than a narrow spike.

3. Add air only if it still sounds closed

Some thin vocals are also dull and closed, missing sparkle rather than weight. If that is the case, add a second band set to a high shelf up around 10–12 kHz and lift it a gentle 1–3 dB. That adds openness and detail. Do this after you have added body, and use it sparingly, because too much up top brings you right back to a thin, brittle sound and can push a vocal into harshness. 4. Re-check in the mix

Body is relative to the rest of the arrangement. A vocal that sounds full alone can turn thin once a big bass and thick guitars are under it, and the other way around. Always make the final call with the full mix playing, and toggle the EQ on and off so you are sure you are improving the balance rather than just making it louder.

What EQ will not fix

EQ rebalances what is in the recording. It cannot create what is not there.

A realistic expectation

Adding body and a touch of air reliably makes a home vocal sound bigger and more present, and it often closes most of the gap to a finished sound. It will not turn a distant phone recording into a close studio vocal. The best low end is still captured, not added, so if you can re-sing closer to the mic, that beats any plugin.

If it still sounds thin

Quick troubleshooting order when the voice is not filling out:

  1. You added body but it got muddy. Move the boost lower, toward 150–180 Hz, or narrow it. Weight lives lower than mud, which sits closer to 250–400 Hz.
  2. The high-pass is still too high. Pull it down in 10 Hz steps and listen for the chest returning.
  3. Compression is doing the damage. Bypass it and confirm. If the vocal is fuller without it, dial the compressor back rather than fighting it with EQ.
