Why your home vocal sounds muddy in REAPER (and how to fix it)

A muddy home vocal is almost always too much energy in the low mids, roughly 150–400 Hz, plus low rumble from the room and the mic being close. Add a high-pass filter around 80–100 Hz and cut a few dB in the low mids with ReaEQ. Both plugins ship with REAPER, so you can do the whole fix without buying anything. It is usually very fixable.
“Muddy” is one of the most common complaints about home-recorded vocals, and it is one of the easier problems to hear once you know what you are listening for. Mud is a lack of clarity: the vocal feels thick, boomy, or veiled, like a blanket is over it. It fights the rest of the mix and never quite sounds finished.
The good news is that mud is a tone problem, not a performance or gear problem. You do not need a better mic or a treated room to make a real improvement. You need to remove the frequency range that is piling up. Here is how to find it and fix it in REAPER with stock plugins.
What mud actually is
Every voice has useful low-mid weight. That warmth mostly lives between about 120 Hz and 500 Hz. Mud is what happens when there is too much of it, or when lower frequencies that carry no useful vocal information get recorded along with the voice.
Three things commonly stack up in a home recording:
- Proximity effect. Directional mics boost low frequencies as you get closer. Home singers tend to record close, so the low end is often exaggerated.
- Room boom. Small untreated rooms build up low-mid energy and reflect it back into the mic.
- Low rumble. Traffic, HVAC, footsteps, and desk vibration add energy below the voice that you feel more than hear, but it still clouds the mix.
Test it before you touch anything
Guessing at EQ is how good vocals get over-processed. Confirm the problem first.
Solo the vocal and listen low
Play the vocal alone. If it sounds boomy, thick, or boxy on its own, the mud is in the recording, not the mix.
Do a quick sweep
Add ReaEQ, take one band, boost it by about +6 dB with a narrow width, and sweep it slowly from 150 Hz up to 500 Hz. The spot that sounds worst, most honky or boomy, is your mud.
Flip that boost into a cut
Once you find the ugliest frequency, turn that same band into a gentle cut. That is your starting point, not a boost you leave in.
A narrow boost always sounds impressive while you sweep, because you are exaggerating one spot. Do not leave big boosts in. The sweep is only a way to locate the problem so you can reduce it.
The fix, step by step in REAPER
REAPER ships with ReaEQ, an unlimited-band EQ, and it is all you need here. Add it to the vocal track’s FX chain.
1. High-pass the rumble
In ReaEQ, set the first band to a high-pass shape and place it around 80–100 Hz for most sung and spoken vocals. This removes rumble and some of the proximity boom without thinning the voice. If the singer is very deep, keep it closer to 70–80 Hz; for a bright female vocal or spoken podcast voice you can often go up to 100–120 Hz.
A real vocal has almost no useful content below roughly 80 Hz. Nearly everything down there is room, handling noise, or plosive thumps, so filtering it clears space without changing the voice you actually want.
2. Cut the low-mid buildup
Take a second ReaEQ band, set it to a normal band (peaking) shape, and place it at the frequency you found during the sweep, usually somewhere in 200–400 Hz. Start with a cut of about 2–4 dB and a medium width. Listen in the full mix, not just soloed. You want the vocal to open up and sound clearer, not hollow or thin.
If you cut too much, the voice loses body and starts to sound like a telephone. Back off until the warmth returns but the mud is gone.
3. Re-check in the mix
Mud is a relative problem. A vocal that sounds fine alone can turn muddy once a bass and drums are under it. Always make the final call with the full arrangement playing. Toggle the EQ on and off to make sure you are actually improving things and not just changing them.

What EQ will not fix
EQ moves tone around, but it cannot undo everything.
- It will not remove strong room reflections or reverb baked into the take. That is a different problem (early reflections and decay), and EQ only masks it.
- It will not repair a recording that was clipped or badly distorted on the way in.
- It cannot add detail that was never captured. If the voice is genuinely dull as well as muddy, you may need a gentle high-shelf lift after clearing the mud, not more low-mid cutting.
Clearing mud makes a vocal noticeably cleaner and more present. It will not turn a phone recording into a studio vocal, but it reliably gets a home take much closer to finished, which is usually what people actually want.
If it still sounds off
Quick troubleshooting order when the vocal is not improving:
- You cut too much. If the voice went thin or nasal, raise the low-mid cut back toward
0 dBand try a smaller reduction. - The high-pass is too high. Above roughly
120 Hzyou start removing chest and body. Pull it down. - It is harshness, not mud. If the problem is up high (piercing “s” sounds or an edge around

Muddy home vocals come from low-mid buildup and room boom. High-pass around 80–100 Hz, find the worst low-mid frequency with a boost sweep, then cut it a few dB with ReaEQ. Judge it in the full mix, and stop as soon as the voice sounds clear rather than thin.
